Nature’s Signs of Spring Here!

How lovely to see robins scurrying across the yard on green grass!

Spring is here!  We can also hear the spring peepers in our pond.

Stay at Crystal River Inn for a quiet weekend. Enjoy the subtle beauty of spring: the joy of daffodils and other blossoms springing up everywhere,  the buds swelling on tree branches, the fresh smell of the earth warming. Of course we have wonderful breakfasts and homemade treats to fill you up and energize you for a lovely day of rest and refreshment, hiking or other activities. See you soon!

Bicycling in February!

We were SO energized by our bicycle ride to Hartman Creek State Park! The weather is just too fantastic – nearly 60 – for February 20! So today we took another 10 mile ride! Come on all you bicyclists get out your bike gear, hop on your bikes and get out there! We met four others cycling and waved and whooped – “What a Great Day!”

We’ve Gone Mobile!

Our web site is now mobile friendly so you can easily make reservations from your smart phone. Since we do it ourselves when we’re on the road we hope you take advantage of this new feature and spread the word!

Here’s a picture – I’m not great at taking photos of food – of the breakfast we served on Valentine’s Day: individual serving of Helen’s Breakfast Soufflé on a bed of sautéd onions and collards (from our garden). The muffin is Lucy Pott’s recipe – Helen’s Grandmother – from the turn of the 20th century, which she made every day in this house for decades!

Hope you had a happy Valentine’s Day.

With Love, Deb and Robert

New Year, New Prices

We have raised our rates as our costs have risen.  We keep our rates as low as we can to be as accessible as possible to folks.

Not the most fun blog to post but needed.  Maybe the bear, fox and coyote sightings make up for the extra.  Those sightings aren’t guaranteed but the beautiful place, delicious, local food, and hosts that treasure you certainly are.

Thank you for being our guests!

Stay safe and warm, Robert and Deb

Our Wisconsin Beautiful Winter Scenery

ourwimagpic

I’m holding Our Wisconsin magazine (Dec-Jan issue) open to the front inside cover featuring our barn in winter. We really enjoy the magazine because as you read it you realize those who put it together really love Wisconsin – people, land, flora and fauna!

WI Veterans Home at King Lodging Discount

We are just a 5 minute drive to the Wisconsin Veterans Home at King (2.3 miles away) and we appreciate having a “home away from home” for folks to come and visit their family members. We even have a wheelchair accessible cottage if you want to bring your loved one to stay with you here. We’ve gotten to know many families this way and it’s a joy to see them together at the holidays and throughout the year. When staying overnight here offer a 20% discount to families visiting relatives at the WI Veterans Home in King.

Cozy Winter Get-Away

christmascookiesIt’s cold outside but cozy inside the inn with a roaring fire in the fireplace and sparkling Christmas tree lights reflecting in the window. The snow outside is beautiful and the temps are cold – a great time to be in the inn, safe and comfortable looking out. Our guests yesterday were grateful for a variety of hot cocoa and tea to drink with their homemade frosted orange cookies and church windows. My mother made church windows since I was a child and I love these rich confections made with chocolate, coconut, mini- marshmallows and pecans. The orange cookie recipe is from a guest who brought these delicacies she made from her grandmother’s recipe. Such fun! They’re pretty as well as delicious! We’re always glad to share recipes.

Fall Colors Collage by CA Friend

Scott Viertel stays with us when he’s in Wisconsin and he sent these wonderful pictures of our place and other lovely Waupaca sites.

Starting top left and going clockwise: our “Solari” bell, Little House on the Prairie, gorgeous “Chain O’ Lakes,” lovely colors, our barn, ramp coming out of the Little House on the Prairie, Weller’s Store, Miller’s carved pumpkins and in the center the covered bridge at the Red Mill. Yes, “beautiful” is the word!  Thanks, Scott!
